Biomix is an OpenFrameworks application for the playback of specially designed, multi-dimensional DJ mixes. Like choose-your-own adventure novels, each track may transition into one of several others. Biomix uses the runner’s pace to decide the final playback order at runtime. The result is a mix to match each runner’s personal performance. Biomix currently runs on desktop using simulated accelerometer data, but an iOS port is underway.
My goal was to create an emotionally responsive music experience. The first prototype used bulky physiological sensors, but these impeded comfortable listening. Who wants to sit still through a great mix? I adapted the application to infer arousal from accelerometer data, and changed my target users to distance runners. Runners thrive off of musical energy and a good beat can make all the difference.
